A Velázquez menina created by Valdés protects the Art Book and the Study Book. Both volumes are housed in a fabric-covered case with the artist’s name silk-screened on it. Its impeccable and elegant presentation makes it a work of art.

Valdés’ vision redirects an artistic past, drawing on artists such as Matisse, Picasso, and, of course, Velázquez, to explore his curiosity and skill in painting, printmaking, and collage, among others.

From all these creations, Valdés personally selects a total of 53 prints reproduced with the highest quality in the Art Book. Meanwhile, in the Study Book, professionals and experts explore Valdés’ universe across four chapters.

The iconic sculpture that presides over this artist’s book, crafted in crystalline resin with its cracks, pores, and imperfections, was specially created by Valdés for this work, making each copy a unique and unrepeatable edition.

PRODUCTION PROCESS

All creation processes were overseen by Valdés himself, with maximum involvement in designing the menina and signing each copy.

Both volumes have been artisanally hand-bound, transferring the essence of the artist’s workshop, a scene featured on the cover of the Study Book.

Images of ladies and gentlemen adorn the cover of the Art Book, which has been manually covered in high-quality fabric.

Three glue points bind each of the 53 prints to the pages of the Art Book, ensuring their optimal preservation.

The numbering, origin, and authenticity seal appear on the lower back of each print.

A wooden case dressed in elegant gray fabric stamped with the artist’s signature protects the piece, secured with a magnetic closure.

The wooden figure used to create the menina is an original by Valdés. The material’s noises and imperfections result in a unique sculpture for each copy.

The piece is precisely covered with silicone, rigorously respecting the model that the artist created specifically for this edition.

The mold is filled with thixotropic resin mixed with blue dye, left to harden while maintaining this composition at rest.

Once solidified, it is carefully demolded, unveiling the vibrant and transparent blue menina.

Polishing and sanding each surface is key to achieving an optimal finish, as well as highlighting the cracks that make each menina a unique piece.

The volumes in their case merge with the menina, perfectly revealing the essence of the great artist Manolo Valdés.

Manolo Valdés

Manolo Valdés

(Valencia, 1942) After a brief period at the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia, his native city, Manolo Valdés began his journey as a painter.

During the 1960s and 70s, he was part of Equipo Crónica, using art as a tool for social and political commentary. After the group dissolved, he resumed his solo career, settling indefinitely in New York—the new capital of the art world.

Valdés’s work spans painting, collage, printmaking and sculpture. It revisits, reinterprets, and celebrates art history, composing creative dialogues with the great masters of the past.
