Vía crucis
Fernando Botero
‘Via Crucis’ is one of the latest series by master artist Botero. In 2012, it was donated to the Museo de Antioquia in Medellín, Colombia. To celebrate the artist’s 90th birthday, it has been transformed into an artist’s book. This edition, limited to 2,998 copies, features 34 drawings and 27 oil paintings that showcase his vision of the Christian ritual.

In collaboration with the Museo de Antioquia in Medellín, the edition comes in a display case where the vivid red of the painting precedes the volume behind the acrylic glass. The case serves as a direct window into Botero’s universe.
The Art Book includes the 34 drawings faithfully reproducing the Via Crucis scenes in pencil and watercolor, moments where the history of art meets the reality of the Colombian people. Each plate is accompanied by a Bible quote printed in the distinctive red associated with the Colombian master.
The Study Book contains essays where experts analyze every detail of the series. It also documents Botero’s contribution to the universalization of art and culture, with tributes from Federico Mayor Zaragoza, former UNESCO director-general, and David Ebony, American art critic.
Contributions from museum collaborators stand out. María del Rosario Escobar, director, provides a panoramic view of Medellín, while curator Camilo Castaño delves into the series, examining the 34 selected drawings in detail for this ARTIKA edition only.
