An artisanal reproduction of a detail from the figure of David, one of Michelangelo’s most recognized works and a symbol of his homeland, precedes the elegant wooden case designed to resemble marble. The Art Book serves as a gateway to Michelangelo’s private world, featuring a curated selection of 75 drawings from the museum’s collection. The Study Book provides a space for reflection and analysis by experts on Michelangelo’s artistic and life journey. Hugo Chapman and Sarah Vowles, head and curator of the British Museum’s prints and drawings department, along with Matthias Wivel, curator at the National Gallery, contribute their insights into the art and culture of 16th-century Italy and France, painting the profile of an artist driven by perfection.
PRODUCTION PROCESS
The face of David graces the cover of the Study Book, which, like the Art Book, is artisanally bound.
The cover of the Art Book features the artist’s signature stamped on fabric, with magnetic flaps for closure.
The numbering and British Museum seal are printed on the back of each of the 75 plates, adhered to the pages with three points of adhesive.
The artist’s name is laser-engraved on the case cover, accompanying the sculpture on its front.
Using a mold and marble powder, a detail of Michelangelo’s David is reproduced as the main image for the case.
Once the marble powder and resin mixture hardens, each detail is manually demolded and polished for an optimal finish.
The case is silk-screen printed, replicating the elegant marble aesthetic to match the figure of David.
The statue is mounted on the case using artisanal gluing techniques.
The final result is a case-sculpture that houses and protects all elements of this edition, making it a work of art in itself.
